Halendang Shawl - Patola Ratu

The weaving pattern is called 'patola'. Patola pattern was from the Indian trader that came to East Sumba. The patola cloth was awarded to Maharaja Jawa (Java Kings) to all kings in Sumba as a symbol of Majapahit influence in Sumba. This pattern in the past was used only by nobleman and kings. In the funeral ceremony, this pattern has the highest position compared to other patterns. The geometry represent the human relationship with themselves and the environment. We can see the patterns found on the walls of the temple such Prambanan Hindu Temple as a decorative motif. The patola pattern has many variations that came from the woven, cultures and environment. The patola also become the symbol of social status and leadership of the nobleman (hundarangga ruu patuala).
