Sukumo Indigo Mini Kit
Authentic Japanese Indigo from Tokushima – Starter Fermentation Vat Kit

In collaboration with a traditional indigo farmer in Tokushima, this kit brings authentic Japanese sukumo to North America. Designed as a beginner-friendly introduction to natural fermentation dyeing, the Sukumo Mini Kit allows you to learn to grow and maintain a healthy indigo vat before committing to a larger setup.

What’s Included (All Organic Materials):

Wood Ash Lye – Made by soaking wood ash in water, this alkaline solution forms the base of the dye vat and encourages beneficial bacteria growth.

Sukumo (Natural Japanese Indigo) – Fermented leaves of Persicaria tinctoria, the essential dye ingredient and source of bacteria needed for fermentation-based colour reduction.

Shell Lime Powder – Regulates the vat’s pH and supplies minerals to support fermentation.

Wheat Bran – Provides sugars that fuel bacterial activity during the fermentation process.

Please Note:
This kit does not include tools. You will need to prepare:
-Container (preferably non-metal)
-Thermometer
-pH meter

Instructions & Tutorials:
Step-by-step guidance is available via Watanabe’s official YouTube channel, where you can follow along and learn the fundamentals of natural indigo dyeing.
